Renderenvironment command in AutoCAD – Set up the parameters for render environment

1. The way to call Renderenvironment command in AutoCAD

Scroll down menu Type command Tool bar
View » Render» Render Environment… Renderenvironment Render

Renderenvironment (Fog) command is used to set up fog and depth cueing parameters. You will set up the color of fog and depth cueing, the far and near distance, the far and near fog percentages. Fog and depth cueing bases on the front clipping plane and the back clipping plane of your camera to connect to settings of the far and near distance. For example, the back clipping plane is put 30cm in comparison with camera, if you want fog to start 15 cm in comparison with camera and unlimited along, you set up Near Distance = 50 and Far Distance = 100.

Density of fog and depth cueing is controlled by Near and Far Fog Percentages. These settings have the value range from 0.0001 ¸ 100. The bigger values mean fog and depth cueing more opaque.

When you call renderenvironment command, Render Environment dialog box appears:

2. The options with Renderenvironment command

Fog and Depth Cue

  • Fog and depth cueing are really 2 extremity of one same function ; white is fog, and black is traditional depth cueing. You can use any color for middle (picture 11.21).

Enable Fog

  • Turning on or turning off fog does not effect on other different settings in the dialog box.

Color

  • Define the color of fog.

Fog Background

  • Use fog for background as well as for geometry objects.

Near Distance

  • Define the distance from camera where fog starts. It is defined as % of distance to the far clipping plane. You can set up the value or by entering Near Distance or using rotation. Near Distance setting cannot be bigger than Far Distance setting.

Far Distance

  • Define the distance from camera where fog ends. It is defined as % of distance to the far clipping plane. You can set up the value or by entering Near Distance or using rotation. Far Distance setting cannot be smaller than Near Distance setting

Near Fog Percentage

  • Define the opacity of fog at near distance

Far Fog Percentage

  • Define the opacity of fog at far distance

Use fog/depth cueing

  • Choose camera and open its Property palette
  • Open the back clipping plane or the front clipping plane
  • Set up the copy value of the clipping plane
  • Enter renderenvironment command
  • Open Enable Fog and set up color of fog or depth cueing

The light colors are used for fog whereas the dark colors are used for depth cueing.

Set up the values NearFar Distance to define the places where fog starts and ends.
Set up the opacity of fog or depth cue with the values Near and Far Fog Percentage.
Press OK
Render : shade the model

Good luck!
