Cornhole is a popular lawn game that combines fun, skill, and friendly competition. Whether you’re playing casually in the backyard or setting up for a tournament, understanding the official cornhole court dimensions and setup ensures a fair and enjoyable experience for all players.
Cornhole Court Dimensions (Regulation Size)
According to the American Cornhole Association (ACA), a regulation cornhole court includes two platforms and a designated throwing area.
- Distance Between Boards (Front to Front): 27 feet (8.23 meters)
- Board Dimensions: 48 inches (4 feet) long × 24 inches (2 feet) wide
- Hole Diameter: 6 inches (centered 9 inches from the top)
- Height (Back of the Board): 12 inches
- Height (Front of the Board): 3–4 inches
Setup Guidelines
- Board Placement
Place the two cornhole boards facing each other, with a 27-foot distance measured between the front edges. Ensure the boards are level and stable. - Pitcher’s Box
Each side of the board has a 4-foot × 3-foot space known as the pitcher’s box. Players must remain within this zone when throwing. - Foul Line
For adult play, the foul line is the front edge of the board. Players must not step past it during a pitch. - Scoring Zone
The scoring area includes the board surface and the hole. Points are awarded as follows:
- 3 points: Bag in the hole
- 1 point: Bag on the board
- 0 points: Bag on the ground or hanging off without touching the board
Playing Guidelines
- Teams and Turns: Cornhole is played by two teams of 1 or 2 players. Players alternate pitching bags toward the opposite board.
- Game Objective: Be the first team to reach or exceed 21 points.
- Game Pace: A coin toss decides who pitches first. Each player throws 4 bags per round.
Additional Setup Tips
- Use quality boards with a smooth surface to ensure consistent bag sliding.
- Bags should weigh 14–16 ounces and measure 6×6 inches.
- Keep the play area free of obstructions and well-lit for safety and visibility.
Conclusion
A properly set up cornhole court not only enhances gameplay but also ensures fairness and consistency. By following standard dimensions and guidelines, both casual players and tournament organizers can enjoy this classic American game to its fullest.
